CQ Downgrades Lincoln Davis Seat From ‘Safe’ To ‘Likely’ Democratic

Tennessee Rep. Lincoln Davis, a Democrat with a center-right image, has won his three House re-election contests by comfortable margins despite his 4th District's overall conservative leanings. But 2010 is looming as a tougher year for Democrats than 2006 or 2008 both nationally and in Tennessee, where two senior House Democrats, John Tanner and Bart Gordon , already have announced their retirements.

The more difficult political environment - and the prospect that physician Scott DesJarlais, a wealthy Republican candidate recruit, could run a well-financed challenge - have prompted CQ Politics to change its rating on the 4th District race to Likely Democratic from Safe Democratic. The new rating means Davis still is viewed as having a solid edge in the race, but the contest is worth watching for signs that it may get more competitive.
